The Children's Scholarship Fund--Charlotte (CSF-C) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping lower-income families exercise their right to choose the schools attended by their children. Every year, CSF-C awards several grants to parents to serve this purpose. These grants vary in size, depending upon factors such as family income and size. The average annual grant is about $1,700. The money may be used to pay tuition. Children enrolled in kindergarten to eighth grade are eligible, and grants may be awarded for multiple years. In order to be eligible for this award, the family must live in Charlotte or Mecklenburg county. CSF-C also has income requirements to ensure that the awards are granted to the applicants with the most need. This grant was not explicitly developed for homeschooling children, but children enrolled in a homeschooling program are eligible.
Apologia Educational Ministries offers three scholarships to graduates of homeschooling, one of which is exclusive to students living in North Carolina. The North Carolinians for Home Education Award for Mission/Ministry training is a $1000 scholarship available to residents of North Carolina who plan to advance their education by training to become ministers or missionaries. Recipients can apply to renew this award for up to four years to help pay for their school expenses. The only requirement for this award beyond the intended career paths is graduation from a homeschooling program. An application for the award can be obtained through the Apologia Educational Ministries website.
Between 1998 and 2010, the North Carolinians for Home Education (NCHE) granted homeschool graduates more then $50,000 to help pay for their college expenses. Award recipients receive the title of NCHE scholars and may use their award to pay for tuition or school supplies. Unlike some grant programs that focus entirely upon academic performance, family need or intended career path, NCHE awards are given to students engaged in a wide range of pursuits. Some students are selected for academic achievement while others distinguish themselves through performance in the arts or athletics. Students active in community service may also apply.
