Ruth Coleman established this award at the University of South Florida to honor her late husband who had graduated from the university. Mrs. Coleman discovered her love for writing while taking classes at the university. The University of South Florida Libraries administers the award. Open to University of South Florida students, unpublished or published, to encourage and reward their writing, the award grants a grand prize and a runner-up. You may submit more than one story with a total word count for the complete submission of 1,000 to 8,000 words. You will need to follow the submission guidelines closely, which you can find at the website along with the current deadline and prize amounts.

Scholastic, through its Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, celebrates the creative achievement of America's teens with art and writing awards and scholarships at the regional and national levels. The Alliance partners with universities, colleges and art institutes to provide partial to full-ride scholarships to Scholastic Award winners. Students in grades seven to 12 can submit their writing in 11 different categories. The Alliance administers five scholarships: Creativity & Citizenship: Art for Social Change Award (three winners); New York Life Award (six winners); B.I.G.(Best in Grade) Awards (two writing winners); Young Artist Awards (90 winners); and Undergraduate Tuition Scholarships (15 winners). Every year, the Ayn Rand Institute sponsors five essay contests, each one addressing topics from one of Ayn Rand's novels. Each contest has its own age eligibility requirement beginning with eighth grade through graduate school and beyond. As of September 2010, prizes ranged from $25 to $10,000. Each contest grants four or five levels of prizes with multiple winners in some levels. You must have read the novel for the contest you wish to enter. You need to choose from three topics listed under the contest, write an essay, and follow the online guidelines exactly to submit your material online or by mail. Winners are free to use their prize money to fund college or as they please.

This award recognizes creative writers of originality and potential who show an unusual perspective and have a distinctive voice. Students who have a B average, rank in the top 25 percent of their class and who apply for admission to Ursinus are eligible. Submission materials include a completed application form and no more than 10 double-spaced pages of creative writing in fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction or some combination of genres. The annual winner receives, as of September 2010, a $30,000 scholarship that's renewable for all four years, the opportunity freshman year to live in the same dorm room where J. D. Salinger lived, and a preferred standing as a candidate to be a Summer Fellow.
