The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers accepts art and writing submissions for 30 different categories, including science fiction and fantasy. Register online to download entry forms (if you are under 18 years old, you will need a guardian's signature) and then submit your application to one of Scholastic's regional affiliates. High school seniors can submit 600 to 3,000 words of short stories, dramatic scripts and poetry. Those who receive Gold Medals, Portfolio Silver Medals or Portfolio Gold Medals are eligible for scholarships from 60 participating colleges and universities.

The prestigious Clarion Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers Workshop offers merit and financial need scholarships. As of 2010, the workshop costs $4,957 to attend and is held at University of California, San Diego. To qualify, you must be at least 18 years old and complete the financial aid portion of the workshop application. You can receive awards ranging from $100 to more than $3,000. The workshop is held for six weeks during the summer.

The contest is open to new science fiction and fantasy writers who have never published a novel or more than three short stories. You can submit writing samples of up to 17,000 words (prose only). Applicants can enter four times a year and receive prizes up to $1,000. You can enter the contest more than once; however, only one piece of work is eligible for review per quarter. Once a year, the four Grand Prize winners are reassessed and the overall winner receives $5,000.

For both the new and published writer, Odyssey Fantasy Writing Workshop is held once a year (six-week summer session) in New Hampshire at Saint Anslem College. Writers from the New York Metropolitan Area can receive scholarships to help pay tuition (as of 2010, $1,900). Accepted writers attend classes and receive in-depth feedback on their submitted manuscripts, usually a short-fiction piece.

The Center for the Study of Science Fiction at the University of Kansas offers scholarships that cover a majority of tuition expenses. The scholarship is open to undergraduate, graduate students (traditional and non-traditional). For 2011 applications should be submitted by mid-March. However, if no scholarship is granted, you can apply until August 20, 2011. It is best to contact the English department to find out the latest news about the scholarship.
