One of the biggest scholarship competitions for story writing is L. Ron Hubbard's Writers and Illustrators of the Future contest. This competition goes on throughout the year, and it was expressly designed for both writers and illustrators. The competition accepts works of science fiction and fantasy that are up to 17,000 words in length from unpublished (or from mostly unpublished) writers. The first prize for the competition is $1,000, second prize is $750, and the third place prize is $500.
The Carnegie Writing Scholarship is offered by Lake Forest College in Chicago, Illinois. Students who will be attending the university that want a chance at the scholarship have to submit a portfolio of their writing (poetry, essays or fiction are all eligible). Artistic achievement scholarships are awarded to students at Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. These scholarships are available for both short fiction writing as well as for poetry writing. Interested students should submit a single short story, or a collection of four poems. Students may also submit plays and screenplays, but they may submit no more than the first eight pages of the piece. Interested students should contact the office of admissions about competing.
