How to Pass the Graph Part of the GED

The GED is a General Educational Development test taken to certify high school academic skills. The math portion of the exam tests how well you can apply basic concepts of numbers, statistics, probability, data analysis, algebra and geometry. In addition, the math portion also contains about one-third of the questions based on problems dealing with graphs and charts. The charts and graph questions ask questions about the information exhibited. For instance, you might have to compare and contrast different data sets shown in a graph, as well as find specific coordinates or write a formula.

Instructions

  1. Pass the Graph Portion of GED

    • 1

Obtain a GED Practice book. Several companies such as McGraw-Hill, Barron's, Peterson's, Kaplan, as well as others publish complete study guides for preparing for the GED test, and include practice tests for after you complete the practice sections. In addition to obtaining a practice guide, search online for GED graph and chart study examples and questions.

    • 2

Start studying graphs and charts with pictures. Graphs are used to make information more interesting and easier to understand; therefore, when you look at the picture graph or chart, make sure you understand the title, the topics in the x and y axes, as well as the number used to represent the information. For instance, a graph might show the cost of different types of cars. Make sure you read the title, which might state, "Cost of Different Car Types". Read the x and y axis of the graph. The x axis may show the different types of cars, while the y axis shows the cost. Look at the amounts and compare each car cost.

    • 3

Find more examples of picture graphs with different chart types. For instance, some graphs may have bars or columns, and some graphs may have lines or scatter plots. Make sure you familiarize yourself with each type of chart.

    • 4

Practice Coordinate Graphs. Start with the practice questions on graphing on a number line then move onto an actual coordinate graph. Familiarize yourself with the graph. The graph contains a horizontal number line, which is the x-axis and a vertical number line, which is the y-axis. The x and y axis intersects at zero on the graph. When a question asks for a specific point on the graph, you can locate that point from the number of units from the zero point of the x and y axis.

    • 5

Start graphing simple equations, such as y=2x + 4, on the coordinate graph. For this equation, you will pick three values for x and find the value for y using simple algebra. Plot and connect the answers to create a line.

Study all material in your practice book. Obtain additional study questions and graphs from the Internet. Take the GED practice test to rank your skills and see if you need more practice or if you are ready to pass the GED.
