As the leaves change from their earthy green to more vibrant hues, use the occasion as an opportunity to study colors. Create leaf cut-outs in an assortment of hues and place them on your bulletin board surface. Type up the color name for each and print them on cardstock. Place the collection of colors at the bottom of your bulletin board, attaching them using pushpins. Allow students to visit the board and place each color next to the leaf cut-out that is that hue. Check student work and reward pupils who successfully sort the colors with an appropriate prize, such as an eraser shaped like a fall leaf.
Monitor the temperature descent with your pupils by creating a fall temperature change bulletin board. To craft this board, place September, October and November calendars along the surface. Place a thermometer outside a classroom window at a height that allows short preschoolers to easily view it. Each day, assist the pupils in reading the temperature off of the thermometer. Record the temperatures on the calendars. At the conclusion of the temperature recording process, discuss why the temperature continues to fall as a lead-in to exploring the concept of seasonal weather change.
Give your students the opportunity to create and display eco-friendly art by creating a pressed leaf gallery bulletin board. After the ground has become littered with shed leaves, take your pupils out to a treed area and ask them each to pick up two or three of these natural beauties. Upon returning to the classroom, place each leaf between two sheets of wax paper, and press the sandwiched leaf with a hot iron to seal it between the sheets. Cover your board surface in black or white paper or fabric to create a colorless surface upon which to place your students' art works. Give each pupil a slip of paper, and ask her to write her name on the provided sheet. Place each student's name, along with her collected leaves, on the bulletin board surface to complete your display of fall beauty.
