Preschool October Bulletin Board Ideas

September's over, and it's time for your "Welcome to Preschool!" bulletin boards to come down. There are plenty of themes you can use for October boards. In fact, changing the board every week or two will keep children interested in what you've posted. Get students involved in making the board as much as possible by having them help with ideas or cut out materials.
  1. Columbus Day

    • Teach children about the discovery of America with a bulletin board about Columbus Day, celebrated annually on the second Monday in October. Cut out a bit of paper to look like the East coast of the United States and the Caribbean, and post it on the far left of the board, then cut out three ships. Label them the Pinta, Nina and Santa Maria and place them to the right of the land so it appears that they're on their way to America.

    Fire Prevention

    • Fire Prevention Week is celebrated each year during the week that includes October 9th. Teach preschoolers about fire safety with a bulletin board that shows how to be safe. Hang a series of pictures of safe and unsafe situations. For instance, hang a picture of a wild, unattended campfire next to a picture of a smaller fire that is being supervised by adults. You can also use the board to teach children about your school's fire evacuation route. Hang a map of the school and highlight your classroom, then use a highlighted line to draw the path to safety in the event of a fire.

    Autumn

    • Autumn is in full swing by October, so cover the board with bright fall colors. Trace the shapes of fall leaves onto yellow, orange, green, red and brown paper and have children cut them out. Write the name of each color on to the leaves of that shade. You can also post a tree with bare branches, then tack on 31 leaves. Each morning, move one leaf from the tree to the ground below. Children can count the number of leaves on the ground each day to find out the day of the month.

    Halloween

    • Get children ready for October 31st with a Halloween bulletin board. You can make a simple board by cutting out ghosts, spiders and pumpkins from construction paper. Write each child's name on one shape. You can also let children create their own pictures of what they will look like on Halloween. Trace the basic outline of a child and give one to each student. Ask children to decorate the picture to show what costume they will wear on Halloween. Cut out a picture of each child's face to glue onto his drawing.
