Preschool Health Bulletin Board Ideas

The concept of "health" is difficult for preschoolers to understand. Make it more concrete for the children by creating bulletin boards in your classroom that teach preschoolers what being healthy means. Use bright colors and patterns so the bulletin boards will capture each child's attention.
  1. Hand-Washing

    • Preschoolers are just starting to use the bathroom regularly, so learning how to properly wash their hands is crucial. Make a bulletin board that shows all the steps to hand-washing. Draw a pair of hands covered in dirt or dots that signify germs. You can then draw a picture of a hand turning on the faucet and squirting a handful of soap. Show the hands rubbing together, turning off the faucet and drying off with a paper towel. Cut out each picture and hang them in order on the bulletin board.

    Dental Health

    • Many children don't brush their teeth long enough or often enough to keep their teeth healthy. Make a board showing pictures of a child brushing her teeth in the bright daylight of morning and another of her brushing them in her pajamas at night. If you have students brush their teeth at school, add a picture of a child brushing during that time. You can also create a series of pictures showing the correct way to brush teeth. Add a picture of a smiling, friendly-looking dentist to calm children who may be frightened of going to the dentist.

    Get Moving

    • If you can teach children to be active when they're young, they have a better chance of becoming healthy adults. Use a bulletin board to show children all the fun things they can do to be active and healthy. Cut out photos or draw images of children swimming, jumping rope, playing sports or walking through a park. You can also ask children to contribute. Ask each child to draw a picture of himself doing his favorite type of exercise, then post the pictures on the bulletin board.

    Healthy Foods

    • Teach children about healthy eating by creating a food pyramid bulletin board. Create your own pyramid that's large enough to fill the whole board, then break it into sections for each food group. In each section, attach pictures of foods that children like. For instance, place a picture of peanut butter in the protein section or a picture of whole-wheat spaghetti in the grains section. Another idea is to divide the board into a "healthy" section and a "not so healthy" section. Have children cut food pictures out of magazines. Help children post the pictures into the correct group.
