Take your preschooler with you as you help out at a local charity event. Have your child help take in donations to a food pantry or other organization that helps the poor. One of the most important character traits that you can try to instill in a child, even one as young as four or five, is the importance of being kind to others.
Teach your preschooler why honesty is important. Read one or more fairy tales to your child in which being honest is a central theme, such as Pinocchio. Learning to tell the truth demonstrates the personal courage to take responsibility for one's actions as well an understanding of the value of maintaining healthy relationships with others.
Create games that teach children what is and what is not considered proper behavior through examples. Develop a game in which you act out various scenarios. For example, you might act out a scene in which you take someone else's candy or take credit for someone else's work. Ask your preschooler if those actions were right or wrong.
