How to Evaluate a Preschooler

Preschool teachers are the first individuals to introduce the education system to young children. Therefore, the way you welcome preschoolers to school can influence the way those students approach learning throughout their academic careers. As a preschool teacher, you want your students to enjoy learning about language, vocabulary, science and math while developing social skills, but you also need to evaluate how the students are progressing. To develop a comprehensive understanding of each child's progress, you need to evaluate their social, cognitive and physical development.

Instructions

    • 1

Draft skill sheets for each preschooler. Dedicate one skill sheet per skill being evaluated for each child. Within each sheet, list specific tasks that allows you to evaluate the skill being tested. For example, one skill sheet for Bobby evaluates his fine motor skills. Listed within the fine motor skill sheet are tasks, such as "Controls scissors to cut paper" or "Strings a set of beads."

    • 2

Ask the preschooler to complete the tasks listed within the skill sheet.

    • 3

Observe the preschooler as he first attempts to complete the task. Determine the ease at which the child completes the task. Assign a "1" to the child for the task if he easily masters the skill, "2" if he is close to mastering it or "3" if he is having trouble mastering it.

    • 4

Ask the preschooler to complete the skills in subsequent weeks and observe his progress. Use the same numbering system outlined in Step 3 to evaluate the child.
