How to Grind Sheet Metal

Although it is possible to grind sheet metal with an ordinary belt sander, the process is time-consuming and does not always produce even results. If you intend to tackle metal-grinding projects frequently or desire a uniform appearance, you should invest in higher-end equipment and invest time in hand-finishing. No specialized skills are required, and sheet metal is relatively expensive and widely available, making it useful for simple welding projects or race track ramps. Grinding the metal will remove surface deformities for a better hold in fusion or provide surface friction on a track surface.

Instructions

    • 1

Set sheet metal on a table or work bench and secure with clamps on each corner. Attach a 60-grit flapper wheel to the angle grinder. Grasp the angle grinder firmly with both hands.

    • 2

Sand the surface of the sheet metal. Remove epoxy coating and achieve a uniform look by following a steady path back and forth across the length of the sheet, or apply the grinder to individual places on the sheet metal to remove deformities or prepare sections for welding.

    • 3

Remove the clamps; finish by sanding the corners of the sheet previously covered by the clamps with sandpaper or emery cloth to achieve a uniform appearance.
