Spot welding, or the practice of creating small, equally spaced welds on the surface of a joint prior to creating the main weld. helps to hold together two sheets of metal when they are welded. By holding together metal pieces, spot welding has the additional benefit of reducing any warping or burn-through that may otherwise have occurred during welding. Spot welding techniques are not difficult. They are based on the same techniques as MIG (metal inert gas) welding except that the welding tool is held steady in one spot.

Place the welding torch directly on the top piece of metal. Hold the torch motionless.

Depress the welding trigger, allowing the electrode wire and shielding gas to be continuously fed.

Maintain the arc for a predetermined amount of time. It will continue to penetrate the metal, in only one place.

Allow the weld to penetrate into the bottom sheet. The amount of penetration that occurs in a particular material depends on the welding current and arc duration.

Repeat Steps 1 through 4 at evenly spaced intervals throughout the surface.
