Select an appropriate filler metal. The filler metal must have mechanical characteristics similar to those of both base metals, and be compatible with both. Ideally, the filler metal should be similar in composition to both base metals.
Clean the stainless steel surface with a stainless steel wire brush. Remove greases and oils using a degreaser.
Use jigs or clamps to keep the pieces of base metal in place while welding. Fire the welding torch and create an arc between the welding tool and the base metal. Allow a welding puddle to form.
Dip the filler metal into the middle of the welding puddle, to ensure adequate shielding. Do not allow the filler metal to drip into the puddle.
Weld along the surface of the base metal at a steady and constant rate, to ensure a uniform weld.
Protect the weld by holding the torch over the welded surface, until the gas stops.
