Bronze, used as filler rod in welding steel base metal, offers compelling benefits. It results in less warping when welding, because it "pulls" the metal less. You can use bronze to weld steel with a painted surface, because paint adheres to it very well. While bronze does not offer mechanical properties that are similar to those of steel--and therefore cannot be used for structural welding repairs--it can be used in numerous non-structural repairs.

1
Connect a bottle of argon to your gas welding machine. Set the gas pressure to the bronze manufacturer's specifications.
-
2
Set the welder to the voltage specified by the bronze manufacturer, and start welding. Keep the weld pool small and the temperature below 150 degrees Fahrenheit, for best results.
-
-
3
Feed the bronze filler metal into the welding arc, covering the seam created by your welder.
-
4
Allow both the bronze and stainless steel to cool, after welding.
