How to Weld Cast Steel

You might find yourself needing to weld cast steel when working with equipment as far-ranging as ship rudder frames, generator frames and steam valves. You may use arc welding, gas welding, or brazing, depending on your priorities, specific needs and budget, but for all of these methods when welding cast steel, you must follow certain guidelines in order to reduce defects in the steel.

Instructions

    • 1

Clean the steel, first with a stainless steel brush and then with a degreaser to remove surface debris and oils.

    • 2

Weld each end of the steel in a series of short passes. As the steel heats, be vigilant to detect sand holes or other defects. Use the flame to bring these defects to the surface of the steel.

    • 3

Work the defects over to the edge of the welding pool using the welding tool. Weld in the same direction each time.

    • 4

Run a weld bead over any holes in the cast steel to eliminate them.

    • 5

Allow the steel to cool to room temperature by covering it in dry sand or wrapping it in a fireproof blanket.
