How to Promote Respectful Relationships Among Students

In any academic setting, mutual respect among teachers, students and administrators is essential in order to maintain a positive learning environment. Creating such a relationship requires that policies be formed and implemented with this in mind. As a teacher, or administrator, there are a number of approaches and steps that you can take to promote respectful relationships among your student body.

Instructions

    • 1

Develop a zero tolerance policy on bullying and post this policy in common areas throughout your school. You can also create a handout for teachers as well as parents so that everyone is on the same page in terms of what is considered acceptable and unacceptable behavior. In a classroom setting, post your policy on a bulletin board. In a college course, include the college's policy as well as your own personal policy in the class syllabus.

    • 2

Hold special classes or seminars at your school that focus on areas that need improvement when a problem crops up, such as instances of bullying. This can be especially important in targeting at risk students that may feel bullied as well as finding solutions to disrespectful conduct of students in class that create disruptions.

    • 3

Create activities that allow students to get to know each other in a collaborative setting. A community project or special event that students can work on together outside the classroom can be conducive to forming friendships. This will in turn promote mutual respect for one another. A play, art show, musical concert or other enjoyable event are all ideas that you can pursue at your school.

    • 4

Ensure that every student feels comfortable contributing thoughts and ideas in your classroom. While discipline is an important component so is making sure that as a teacher, or instructor, you clearly state that constructive input from students is something you value in your classroom.
