How to Promote Poetry in a School Library

Poetry, with its beautiful language and symbolism, offers insight into the human condition. Students who read poetry learn about this important literary tradition. School libraries often stock many volumes of poetry, but students may not know what's available. Students may not have ever been exposed to poetry before. By promoting this literary art form to the rest of the school, both students and teachers gain awareness about the offerings contained in the school library.

Instructions

    • 1

Hang poetry-related posters in the library. Posters can provide information about famous poets or poems. Posters highlighting poetry will draw students' attention to the literary genre.

    • 2

Organize poetry books on a table set up by a wall near the library entrance. Spell "poetry" with letters cut from colored construction paper, and hang the letters on the wall. Point the table out to students and recommend they peruse its offerings.

    • 3

Work with teachers to implement poetry lessons into English lesson plans. Have the teachers bring students to the library so you can educate the students about the importance of poetry.

    • 4

Organize events, such as poetry readings or poem memorization contests, during or after-school in the library. Publicize the events with posters hanging up in the school hallways and notices on the school website and in its newsletter. Also announce the events on the school's loudspeaker at the start of the day.

    • 5

Walk around school and visit all the classrooms. Tell students why poetry is important, mention the poetry books available in the library and let them know that they are welcome to visit.
