How to Evaluate a School Library

When choosing a school for your child, it is important to evaluate all of the school's faculties, including the library. Students should have access to everything they need to complete class projects as well as to focus on enrichment and study. Most school libraries follow standards set forth by stage legislature, but you can personally evaluate a school library to determine its quality.

Instructions

    • 1

Consult your state's guidelines for the standards of evaluation for public and school libraries. Review the Resources section for a comprehensive reference.

    • 2

Create a list of what you personally find important in a library. Add these items to your state's guidelines.

    • 3

Schedule an appointment with the school's librarian. Mention that you would like to know more about the library's programs and how they will further your child's education.

    • 4

Meet with the librarian, and ask any questions compiled from your standards research. Evaluate the librarian on his willingness to aid you and his enthusiasm for the library.

    • 5

Evaluate the library on your own based on your standards research.

    • 6

Evaluate the library for organization, cleanliness and accessibility.
