Ensure homework assignments are relevant, challenging and meaningful to enhance classroom learning objectives. One way of doing that is by making students apply the knowledge they have learned in their homework.
Get feedback from parents to learn how long it is taking a student to complete an assignment. The time frame for completing an assignment is usually dependent on habits, learning skills and course load. Encourage parents to contact you if the student is spending an inordinate amount of time to complete an assignment at home.
Talk to parents to encourage students to develop a habit of leisure reading at home. Encourage them to set a regular study time to study and complete homework. Parents must also be encouraged to be supportive when the student is getting frustrated with challenging assignments.
Schedule a time when students must turn their homework in. Let students who submit their homework late face consequences. You could give them partial or no credit, communicate with their parents or let them stay behind to do classwork when everyone else is gone home. However, give those who miss homework because of excused absences a chance to make up.
Encourage the student to get organized by daily listing assignments in the agenda. Allow students to ask questions if they are not sure about the assignments. You also need to encourage students to complete homework assignments within a specific amount of time.
