How to Create a Listening Portfolio for ESL

Textbooks and other published resources for English as a second language students often include listening exercises. If you have specific content that you want to include in a listening portfolio for your ESL students that you cannot find or afford to buy from a publisher, make your own.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down a list of the topics that you want to cover in the listening portfolio after identifying what level student you want the portfolio to target. For example, if you want to create listening samples related to finding a job, include a sample mock interview and a conversation on how to ask for an application.

    • 2

Write scripts for each of the listening pieces you want to include in the portfolio. They should be written at a level that your students can understand when they hear them. Write the scripts to include authentic-sounding conversations that would be used in everyday situations. The more realistic your listening exercises, the more useful and memorable they are for your students.

    • 3

Ask another English speaker to work with you to record the different pieces. Practice reading the scripts together several times. Focus on speaking at a pace that is understandable for new English speakers but not so slow that it sounds forced. Speak clearly, enunciating each word carefully.

    • 4

Record each script with your partner. Listen through your recording to look for mistakes before you distribute it to students. Label your recording so you know what topics it covers and what level it is meant for. Also do this for students' copies of the material. You have several options for recording and distributing the listening portfolio, including recording scripts on your computer and then burning them to CDs to give to students, recording them on cassette tapes or recording them digitally and uploading them to your website for students to listen to.
