How to Create a Personal Portfolio for a College Project

Putting together a portfolio is a great way to show off your skills and achievements during a specific period of your life or career. Some types of jobs use portfolios when hiring candidates as it allows the employer to review previous work history. To prepare college students with a portfolio they can use when job searching, some institutions require students to create a personal portfolio for a college project.

Identify your purpose. Understand why you are required to put together a personal portfolio for your college project. Ask your instructor or academic advisor for clarification if you don't understand certain aspects of the project. Know whether the portfolio is specific to a particular class or covers the entire time you've spent taking classes at the institution.

Reflect on your experience. Take time to reflect on your time as a student. Use paper and pen to jot down specific high and low points. Consider the different experiences you had both inside and outside the classroom. Note the weaknesses or personal challenges you faced and how you overcame them.

Amass documents. Gather any academic documents that you feel are an important part of your personal portfolio. This may include papers you wrote, research you conducted, graphics you designed or similar items. Include any awards you received or any special events in which you participated.

Organize. Make sure that everything you include in your portfolio is nice and neat. Purchase a portfolio binder or folder in which to place it as this makes it easy to transport and turn in when required for your college project. Include a brief narrative at the beginning of the portfolio if this is needed to explain some of the pieces in your personal portfolio.
