How to Use a Scantron Sheet

Scantron machines revolutionized the testing industry. Teachers no longer have to sit for hours grading papers; now they can feed tests into a Scantron machine to have them graded automatically. Scantron sheets are strips of paper filled with empty oval bubbles marked A, B, C, D or E; test takers must color in the bubble that corresponds with the correct answer. To prevent cheating, many teachers hand out multiple versions of the same exam so students can't look over and copy the answer pattern from the nearest paper.

Instructions

Fill in the identification information at the top of the Scantron sheet. Listen carefully to your test administrator; she will tell you exactly what to fill in. Depending on the purpose of your test, she might ask you to leave some of the identification spaces blank. Typical requirements include your name, grade, class section, type of test and the date.

Don't bend, tear, rumple or crease your Scantron sheet, as damaging the test in any way could result in correct answers being marked as incorrect. If you notice you've damaged your test, ask for another Scantron sheet so you can transfer your answers to a fresh copy before turning in your exam.

Read your test questions thoroughly, and think carefully before choosing your answer. Fill in the oval that corresponds to the correct choice. Use a number two pencil (no pens) to color in your answer bubble; press down as hard as you can so your oval will be dark enough to register with the grading machine. Stay inside the lines; marks outside the designated ovals could confuse the Scantron machine and result in an accidental wrong answer. Erase mistakes thoroughly so that no trace of your old answer is left; even a faint mistake can be picked up by the grading machine.

Notice periodically whether the number on your exam and the number on your Scantron sheet match up. If you skip a question, remember to leave the corresponding space blank on the Scantron sheet. Putting your answers in the wrong bubbles, even if you know the right answer, will result in your answers being marked as incorrect.
