How to Use ATI As a Criterion-Referenced Test

Assessment Technologies Institute (ATI) is a nursing education resource organization that provides learning systems for students before, during and after nursing school. The ATI Test of Essential Academic Skills (TEAS) is a multiple-choice assessment exam that evaluates a nursing school applicant's skills and abilities in math, science, reading, English and language usage. You can interpret your individual scores using a criterion-reference, which shows whether you have met an established standard, rather than interpreting your scores in comparison to others who took the exam.

Instructions

    • 1

Review the ATI TEAS exam's individual performance profile document that you receive after taking the test.

    • 2

Review your scores at the top of the page. The report will list an adjusted individual score, national mean, program mean, national percentile rank, program percentile rank and your ATI Academic Preparedness Level, which is the criterion-based measure that determines how ready you are to meet a nursing program's academic objectives. The preparedness level will read "Exemplary," "Advanced," "Proficient," "Basic" or "Developmental."

    • 3

Review the definition of the five ATI Academic Preparedness categories at the end of the report. Exemplary and advanced scores indicate a high level of preparedness, proficient scores indicate a moderate level of preparedness, and basic and developmental scores indicate a low level of preparedness. If you score at the proficient, basic or developmental level, the report will list topics to review, which are subject areas that require improvement.
