How to Make a Printable Sheet for Preschooler to Trace Her Name

Teaching your preschooler to write her name is a process that evolves over time. First, children must learn how to hold writing implements and develop adequate fine motor skills. They must learn that those little squiggles on the paper are letters that have meaning, and when put together make words. Finally, a child may begin practicing the strokes that make up letters and then making the letters themselves. Some children are highly motivated to learn to write their names; other children may need a bit more nudging. Keep your approach light and positive, and eventually your child will master her name. Use printable sheets in conjunction with other teaching methods.

Download worksheets from online sites. Many of these sites produce name strips that are too small for preschoolers. Choose name strips that are at least 2 inches high or enlarge them on your home printer. As your child's fine motor skills improve, she'll be able to use smaller name strips.

Make dotted line paper with a ruler and marker, and write your child's name. Make copies for your child to practice on. When writing your child's name, use correct letter formations.

Write your child's name several times on the computer. Choose a simple font such as Comic Sans and set the font size to at least 60. Print out the name in a light color, such as orange or yellow and instruct your child to trace the name with a dark marker.
