How to Decorate Classroom for Writing Camp

Writing camp is an event some some schools organize in which students and teachers set aside time to focus on learning and refining different writing techniques. These "camps" may occur during a specific week, one day a week during set months or even as a period during the regular school week. Decorating the classroom with a camp theme can add to the fun and help distance students from their daily routine to get the creative juices flowing.

Instructions

    • 1

Create a pretend campfire by gluing red and orange cellophane to four small logs. Use 1-1/2 to 2 feet of cellophane for each 12-inch log to allow room for flame-like ruffles and crinkles. Glue the cellophane so that it stands mostly upright and arrange the four logs into a square around a lamp with an orange bulb. Turn on the "campfire" whenever a student reads his story to the others to build excitement and motivation.

    • 2

Set up a one-man pup tent in a low-traffic part of the room. Let students take turns using the tent as a work or resting space. To maintain safety, keep the tent door open at all times and do not allow more than one student at a time to use the tent. Tent time may be given as a prize for good behavior.

    • 3

Lay out a few sleeping bags around the edges of the room and encourage students to bring their own sleeping bags for the duration of writing camp. To maintain safety, students should not go into the sleeping bags, but may lounge on them while completing some activities.

    • 4

Decorate the walls and bulletin boards with camp-themed printables and cutouts. Use brown and green construction paper to create bulletin board borders and backgrounds. If desired, cut out stumps, leaves and branches and attach them to the walls with poster tack after testing to make sure the poster tack does not damage or discolor the walls.

    • 5

Set up camp chairs in circles for the children to sit in during discussion-related activities. Bring camp cups for the children to use for water. Label each cup with a strip of masking tape and a student's name in marker. If you do not have enough camp chairs or camp cups, encourage children to bring their own.
