Decide on a layout for the classroom. Break the classroom down into areas and designate them for specific uses. For example, the area near the dry-erase or chalkboards is best reserved for placing student seating, while a space near a sink is an ideal location for an art area.
Bring in elements that will help you bring the layout you've created to life. Choose furniture pieces that are comfortable, and select storage accessories that are functional and easy to access. For instance, for the reading nook or classroom library, bookshelves, a plush area rug, beanbag chairs and overstuffed pillows are ideal elements to make the space an inviting location where students can read in comfort.
Incorporate visual elements to add color and interest to the classroom. Hang posters on the walls that showcase helpful tips and strategies, such as the writing process or the steps of scientific investigation. Use letter decals to create inspiring quotes on the walls of the classroom, making it feel less industrial and more like a home. Hang mobiles from ceilings -- perhaps the solar system or maybe dangling stars. Dedicate spaces to showcase student work, also.
Create signs to hang on the walls that indicate the use and purpose for each area. Use brightly colored paints or markers to create signs on pieces of poster board. For example, signs may read "Art Corner," "Reading Nook" and "Scientific Discovery." Create the signs yourself or make it a class project and enlist the help of your students. Display the signs in areas that are easily visible.
