Set up a presentation area in front of the classroom by a table. Use a podium to place your notes and talk about current and future class events.
Place a fold-out table near the podium with portfolios of each student's work and progress. Create a packet with your contact information, class syllabus, unit and test schedule and homework tips.
Stack about 30 to 40 index cards next to the handouts. Ask each parent to take one. When you give your presentation, ask parents to write a yearly goal for their child to meet during the year. Place a jar or bowl on the table and collect the index cards later.
Hang recent class projects around the room so parents see different activities. For example, if you completed a coloring assignment for working with numbers or a holiday craft for Halloween, hang up each kid's work around the room.
Create a bulletin board with a large graph and show each student's favorite subject. Use the student's picture to place beside each category such as math or science.
Stand a few textbooks near the podium or presentation area to hold up when you talk about what students are currently learning.
Clean the chalk board. Write your contact information, including name, office number and email address on one side. Use the other side to demonstrate math problems or sentence diagrams, depending on your subject.
Post a sign-up sheet with scheduled events on the bulletin board. Parents sign up as chaperons or volunteer to bring in snacks for each of the events, such as a school dance, field trip or class picnic.
Place a welcome mat outside your classroom door. Ask students to help color in a banner with the words, "Welcome to 5th Grade, Parents!" to get the kids more involved.
