How to Dye Pasta for a Necklace for Kindergarten

Threading items onto string strengthens kindergarteners' fine motor skills. A down side to the wooden or plastic beads sold for this task is that they can be a choking hazard. Making beads out of dried pasta reduces the risk of choking since the pasta will slowly soften if inserted in a child's mouth. Choose pasta with large holes so that kindergarteners can use thick string, such as shoestrings or yarn.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose dry pasta that has an opening, such as macaroni, penne, rigatoni, manicotti or wheels.

    • 2

Add 10 drops of a single color of food coloring into a disposable plastic container, such as a clean yogurt cup. Stir in 1 tsp. of rubbing alcohol in the food coloring.

    • 3

Drop in a 1/2 cup of dry pasta and shake the container to cover the pasta with color; use a spoon to stir the pasta if necessary. Remove the colored pasta with a slotted spoon and drain off any excess liquid. Place the colored pasta in a single layer on a stack of three to four paper towels to absorb the excess dye.

    • 4

Put each color you want to use in separate containers so the colors do not mix.

    • 5

Add designs to the surface of pasta by writing on the pasta with a clear wax crayon. Decorate the pasta with geometric shapes or abstract marks and then shake the pasta around in a food coloring container. The wax will not absorb the color, so the design is seen through the dye.
