How to Learn the Alphabet Through Games

Alphabet letter identification is the first step a student takes when learning to read. Most students can recite the alphabet by the time they start kindergarten and learning to recognize the shape of each letter is the next step toward reading. Teachers can make learning the alphabet an enjoyable experience by playing games.

Instructions

  1. Alphabet Clothes Pin Relay Race

    • 1

Tape or staple alphabet flash cards on a piece of twine to form a long chain. Pin the alphabet chain to a bulletin board or tape it to a wall so that the cards hang freely at the bottom of the chain. Write each letter of the alphabet on a spring clothes pin.

    • 2

Put all of the clothes pins in a plastic container. Shake the container to mix up the alphabet clothes pins. Divide the class into teams.

    • 3

Instruct the students to line up by groups. Tell the students to race to the plastic container and take a letter clothes pin and then race to the alphabet chain. Instruct the students to match the letter on their clothes pin with the letter on the chain and then clip their clothes pin to the card. Race to the back of the line. Repeat with the next student in line.

    Alphabet Board Game

    • 4

Open a plain file folder and press it flat on the table. Draw or glue letters of the alphabet on the file folder and draw game spaces between the letters to form one continuous looping track of game spaces that loops through the letters and connects back at the beginning. Use scissors and old magazine to cut out pictures of animals, plants and objects whose names begin with each letter of the alphabet to decorate the board.

    • 5

Glue the pictures of animals, plants and objects under each letter on the game board. Give the student player a checker and write their initials or name on the checker with a marker. Give the first player a die and instruct the student to roll the die.

    • 6

Move the checker the number of spaces indicated by the roll of the die. Instruct students to name the letter that their checker lands on. Move back the number of spaces indicated by the roll of the die if the student cannot name the letter.
