Crafts for the Alphabet Letter G

Alphabet craft activities provide fun ways for children to practice fine motor skills and consolidate learning of individual letters. Craft activities that emphasize alliteration help young children remember letter sounds while they concentrate on simple projects that involve coloring, cutting, gluing and manipulating materials such as paper, fabric and dough. Children should learn that the letter G represents two distinct sounds in words: the hard "G" sound, as expressed in words such as "goose" and "gloves;" and the softer "J" sound, as expressed in words such as "giraffe" and "gingerbread."
  1. Glittery Gloves

    • Let children draw around each hand onto stiff paper, such as construction paper, to represent a pair of gloves. Provide materials such as sequins, loose glitter, sparkly pieces of fabric, colorful buttons and glue with which children can decorate their paper gloves. Once completed and the glue is dry, an adult can cut out the children's paper gloves. Reinforce children's recognition of the letter G and its sound by displaying the pairs of gloves next to a large letter G and the label, "Glittery Gloves."

    A Gaggle of Geese

    • Sing the nursery rhyme "Goosey, Goosey, Gander" with the children to emphasize the sound of letter G through alliteration. Show the children photographs or illustrations of geese from picture stories such as "Honk, Honk, Goose!" by April Pulley Sayre. Provide a large oval template for the goose body and a small oval template for the goose head, and let children draw around them onto white construction paper to create a goose outline. Provide materials such as crayons, glue, feathers, paper, sequins and pipe cleaners in colors such as gray, white and black for children to decorate their geese shapes. Have them add eyes, legs, feet and beaks to their outlines.

    Salt Dough Gingerbread Men

    • Read the story of "The Gingerbread Man" to the children and emphasize the sound that is made by the letter G in the word, "gingerbread." Mix two parts flour, one part salt and a sprinkling of powdered ginger with enough lukewarm water to make a soft, pliable dough. Let children use a rolling pin to roll out the dough, and then cut out shapes by using gingerbread cookie cutters. Bake at 180 degrees for about 20 minutes. Once cooled, let children paint and varnish their gingerbread men, and display them alongside a copy of "The Gingerbread Man" story and a label of the letter G.

    Shoe Print Giraffes

    • This activity is adapted from the "Giraffe Collage" activity suggested by the Busy Bee Kids Craft website. Help children to draw around one of their feet (with their shoe kept on) onto yellow construction paper to represent a giraffe's head. Cut out the foot shape and then use the remaining yellow paper to cut out two ears, two horns and a long neck. Glue the giraffe parts onto brown construction paper. Let children glue two googly eyes onto their giraffe's head and then add spots by using their fingers dipped into brown paint. Snip small pieces of brown wool and glue along the edge of the giraffe's neck.
