Ice Skating Paper Crafts for Children

Ice skating is a popular activity among children who live in climates that support frozen bodies of water. Children who don't ice skate can watch coverage of the sport on winter Olympic and other competitive broadcasts. When ice skating-fever strikes the children in your care, make and display a roomful of ice-skating paper crafts.
  1. Lace Up Skates

    • Make a paper skate craft that children can decorate and lace. Draw a boot shape onto a 9-by-12-inch piece of heavyweight construction paper. Leave a 1-inch space blank under the boot shape. Beneath it, draw a 2-inch wide skate in the shape of a cane laying on its side with the hook end curved up. Extend the skate blade 1-inch in front of the boot shape and 1-inch behind it. Draw two inverted 1/2-inch wide "V" shapes to attach the skate to the boot. Place the front "V" directly under the area that is considered the ball of the foot and the back "V" directly under the heel. Cut out the completed ice skate shape and use it for a pattern to make more. Punch nine holes, 1/2-inch apart, along the front edge of each boot. Youngsters can color the boots with markers, then apply a thin coating of liquid glue to the blade and sprinkle it with silver glitter. Give each child a 9-inch length of yarn to lace through the holes.

    Ice Skating Rink

    • Pass each child a 9-by-12-inch piece of heavyweight construction paper and scissors. Instruct the children to cut a wavy circular or oval pond shape from the paper. When the children have cut their shapes, tear off pieces of foil that will cover the shape, and tell the youngsters to lay the pond shapes on the foil and carefully fold it over the edges. Smooth the foil and tape it to the paper. Apply liquid glue to the exposed paper on the back of the pond shape, then stick it to a 12-inch-by-18-inch sheet of white construction paper to make a skating rink in a snowy setting. Give the children more paper, crayons and scissors so that they can draw ice skaters to cut out and glue to the skating rink crafts.

    Skating Snow-People

    • Give each child one 9-inch and one 6-inch-diameter white construction paper circle. The smaller circle is the head and the larger circle is the body of a "skating snow-person." Let the kids draw a face and buttons with crayons on the circles. Glue the heads to the bodies. Pass black construction paper and scissors, then ask the children to cut a hat and boots to fit the snow-person. Glue the hat to the head. Pass gray or silver construction paper and draw, then cut out two moon-shaped skate blades. Glue the skate blade shapes to the bottom of the boots. Punch a hole 1/2 inch from the top of each boot. Punch two holes, 3-inches apart and 1/2-inch up from the bottom of the body of the snow-person. Attach the boots to the body with 4-inch-long loops of yarn.
