Handprint tracings can be used in a number of age-appropriate kindergarten crafts. Kids can trace their handprints and date them to have as a keepsake for parents. Trace and cut out two handprints then tape them together at the palms to make a butterfly shape that kids can decorate with markers, paints and glitter. Turning a handprint cutout into a turkey is a popular Thanksgiving craft, or glue a several handprints around into a circle to make a festive holiday wreath decoration.
Basic craft clay is non-toxic, making it a great medium for kindergarten crafts. Kids can use clay to create small bowls or figurines. Allow clay to dry and let kids paint their pieces with non-toxic acrylic or watercolor paints. Another keepsake craft is to have kids make imprints of their hands or feet in clay; let it dry and decorate it as desired and mark the date.
Papier maché is another easy, safe craft medium for a number of kindergarten projects. For papier maché, mix white craft glue, flour and water into a paste. Dip strips of newspaper in the paste and lay them around a form of some kind. For example teach little ones about the Earth by making a papier maché Earth and pasting strips around a balloon. Let paste dry then paint your hardened sphere to look like the Earth.
Edible crafts are a delicious option that can make snack time fun. For example, mix batches of vanilla pudding, then add colored food dyes to each batch. Let kindergartners paint pieces of paper with the pudding. This can get messy so plan to do it outdoors or in an area lined with newspaper or sheets. Other crafts include decorating cookies or cupcakes, or making ant logs by filling celery with peanut butter and adding raisin "ants" on top.
