Kindergarten Farm Crafts

"Down on the Farm" is a common thematic unit for kindergarten classrooms and you can fulfill the core subject content in science with crafts involving animals and seed growth, for social studies with a farmer community helper, as well as in music by singing "Old McDonald Had a Farm." Use the broad concept to engage in creative craft projects with the students to reinforce the lesson content and the integration of hands-on activities.
  1. Farm Book

    • Instruct kindergartners to create their own farm book. Give them a template consisting of a barn with an attached silo to trace onto two pieces of red construction paper for the covers as well as four pieces of white printer paper for the inner pages. Each student will draw four chosen farm animals and write a few words about their importance on the farm. For example, sheep provide wool, while chickens lay the eggs used for the farmer's breakfast.

    Farm Puppets

    • Have students draw or color animal face templates such as those on the DLTK website (see Resources). Cut each face out and glue it to one end of a wooden craft stick to create farm animal stick puppets to use in a dramatic play or retelling activity. Paper bag puppets are another dramatic play activity. Have students draw a farm animal or a farmer onto paper lunch bags. Pair the craft with the singing of the "Farmer in the Dell."

    Animal and Vegetable Crafts

    • Have children trace the outline of a shoe onto brown paper and cut out the shape. They can draw horse nostrils on the thicker section and eyes on the thinner heel. Students then draw and cut out two small triangles for the ears and a long triangle with the top cut off for the neck. Attach the ears and neck to the head with glue. Add a brown yarn mane. Draw a carrot onto orange construction paper and the top leaves on green paper. Cut them out and glue them together to create a carrot bookmark to align with crop content activities.

    Farm Science Crafts

    • Have children decorate plastic or foam drinking cups with cutout pictures of a farm crop, such as oats, soybeans or corn. Place soil and the applicable crop seed in the cups. Children can see which of the types of seeds grows the quickest. In a separate activity, give each pair of students a baby food jar and 1/8 cup of heavy cream. Instruct the pairs to take turns vigorously shaking the jar until butter is formed. Use the butter as "glue" to create an edible barn with four walls and a pitched roof using whole wheat crackers.
