One of the simplest crafts for the Humpty Dumpty nursery rhyme is coloring sheets. You can print off one or two different sheets and have the children color in the pictures. Try to find at least two pages that show the same scene, Humpty Dumpty sitting on the wall for instance, but have very different takes. After the children color the sheets, have them compare and contrast the drawings on the coloring sheets as well as any artistic additions they might have added. Use this activity to show that people can hear different things in poems and stories and that each person might interpret the verse a bit differently.
Let each child create his own moveable Humpty Dumpty using an egg shaped template and different body parts. You will want to give each child a pre-cut oval and you can either print out different arms and legs or let each child create his own. Let the children add hair, eyes, nose, mouth and any other accessories like clothing as they see fit. Attach the arms and legs with brass fasteners so those can be moved. Each child will have his own Humpty Dumpty that can be used for retelling the nursery rhyme.
You can have the children create finger puppets for each character in the Humpty Dumpty nursery rhyme. You can either print out templates from the Internet or let each child design her own paper puppet. To keep the puppets on the children's fingers, you can attach a paper ring to the bottom of the puppet figure that will slip over the children's fingers. Let the children retell the nursery rhyme as a group, using their finger puppets. You will want to make sure you only have one Humpty Dumpty and many King's horses and King's men. Consider assigning the characters to each child to make the process a bit easier for you.
If you want to allow the children to retell the story independently, a good option is to have them make larger versions of each character. Toilet paper rolls can serve as a good, sturdy base for characters that are kindergarten sized. You can either download templates from the Internet or allow the children to draw their own version of the characters. The drawings can then be glued to the toilet paper rolls. You will need to assign each child a character to create, making sure you only have one Humpty Dumpty and multiple horses and men. You can also have a child make a wall for Humpty to sit on and eventually fall off of. The characters should be sturdy enough that the children can play with them on their own as well as in a group with adult supervision.
