Humpty Dumpty Nursery Rhymes & Crafts

Humpty Dumpty is a classic nursery rhyme about a character who falls and cannot be put together, despite the best efforts of "all the king's horses and all the king's men." Because it is short and simple, Humpty Dumpty is an ideal rhyme to teach to young children. Plan simple, creative art projects to accompany the rhyme.
  1. Humpty Dumpty Finger Puppets

    • Make Humpty Dumpty finger puppets from paper, recommends the website Enchanted Learning. Cut an oval shape from white card stock. Use a hole punch to punch two holes in the bottom of the egg, large enough for your students' fingers to fit through. Give each student a paper oval and markers, and encourage them to decorate the ovals as Humpty Dumpty, adding a face, hair and clothing. Show students how to stick their index and middle fingers through the holes and make Humpty Dumpty walk. Recite the rhyme and ask students to re-enact Humpty Dumpty's great fall.

    Egg Painting

    • Humpty Dumpty is often described as an egg, so decorate hard-boiled eggs or eggs made from Styrofoam to look like Humpty Dumpty. Give students the eggs and distribute paint, and encourage them to paint Humpty Dumpty on the egg. Use pipe cleaners to add wiggly arms and legs to Humpty Dumpty, and glue yarn to the top of the egg to make hair.

    Dramatic Play

    • Help students learn the Humpty Dumpty rhyme through dramatic play. Set up a chair in the middle of the classroom. Place a soft mat or pile of blankets in front of the chair. Ask students to pretend that the chair is the wall that Humpty Dumpty falls from and to take turns playing Humpty Dumpty. Encourage students to recite the nursery rhyme as each student acts out the part of Humpty Dumpty falling out of the chair. Alternatively, use a doll as Humpty Dumpty instead of a student.

    Humpty Dumpty Puzzle

    • Show students how to make a simple paper Humpty Dumpty puzzle. Cut oval shapes from heavy card stock and give one to each student. Let students draw Humpty Dumpty on the ovals. To make the puzzles last longer, laminate each oval once it is decorated. Next, cut the oval into a few simple pieces. Return the puzzles to students and see who can put Humpty Dumpty back together again.
