Read any version of "Humpty Dumpty" to pre-kindergartners during story time. Invite students to retell the nursery rhyme with a felt storyboard. Provide felt pieces for Humpty Dumpty, a brick wall, the king's horses and men. Give students coloring sheets so they can color and cut out their own Humpty Dumpty pieces. The students can glue characters on craft sticks for acting out the nursery rhyme or for sharing with parents at home.
Give students a piece of heavy white card stock cut into an oval. Distribute markers, crayons, googly eyes, glitter and tissue paper to make a Humpty Dumpty. Tell the students to cut out their Humpty Dumptys into a few large pieces to make puzzles. Have them trade their puzzles with classmates to see if they can put someone else's Humpty Dumpty together again. Extend the activity by creating larger Humpty Dumpty puzzles on butcher paper and invite students to work together on a Humpty Dumpty floor puzzle.
"Humpty Dumpty" was originally a riddle, and its answer was an egg. Bring in raw eggs and let students crack them open then use magnifying glasses to examine the yolks and egg whites. Crack open a few more eggs, scramble them with a fork and serve them for snack time. Hard-boil a few eggs and let students spin them or simply peel and eat. If students suggest putting the hardboiled eggshells back together, let them try it out.
Encourage pre-kindergartners to put on a Humpty Dumpty play where one person plays Humpty Dumpty sitting on a few pillows. When Humpty Dumpty falls off the pillows, have classmates ride in on play horses to put Humpty Dumpty together. Play "Don't Drop the Egg" where students toss a plastic egg back and forth trying not to drop Humpty Dumpty. Gather 10 to 15 colored plastic eggs, both large and small, separate the halves and place all the pieces in a basket. Have students work together or individually to match up the egg pieces correctly.
