Hair Projects for Preschool

At some point in time, your preschooler may experiment with cutting her own hair. Children take cues from the behavior they have seen and experienced to develop habits. The preschool classroom is a perfect place to introduce concepts of hair hygiene and to celebrate the differences in hair type, especially for multicultural classrooms. Hair projects can incorporate literature of hair care, videos and activities that allow children to play out their fears and experiences, such as a trip to the barber or hair salon.
  1. Static Electricity

    • When positive and negative charges transfer between two different materials, they are pulled together. This attraction can be manufactured by rubbing two objects together, as in the case with clothing just taken from the dryer. The action of rubbing causes negative charges to be expelled. Use a balloon create friction with hair. Draw the balloon away from the student's head to show the attraction. The students will be able to see the balloon stick to their hair.

    Hair Cuts

    • A visit to the barber shop can be an undesirable trip for preschoolers. Sharp objects buzzing beside thier ears and coming close to their head can be scary and intimidating. To ease their fears, try showing an educational video of a favorite character talking about the importance of getting a haircut, as well as hair care and styling. After the video, have students talk about their experiences at the barber shop. Put together a kit containing barber shop items -- clippers, brush, scissors -- and allow children to play with the items in dramatic play. Also, the word "trim" may be more palatable than "haircut" when describing the procedure.

    Hygiene

    • Red eyes and tears are no longer synonymous with washing children's hair. With so many mild, natural ingredient based products on the market, hair washing can be a fun bath-time experience. Talk to the students about the importance of washing their hair often, and discuss easily communicable childhood conditions like head lice, a bug infestation of the scalp. Tell the students about treatment plans, such as the use of permethrin cream rinse, which can be purchased over-the counter. Do a demonstration of items that need to be thoroughly disinfected like clothing, bedding, and hairbrushes or combs. Coincide your head lice lesson with a school nurse screening of your students.

    Celebrate Hair

    • Preschoolers are beginning to conceptualize their self-concept and could benefit from a positive recognition of differences. Developing a positive self-concept consists of a genuine belief in ability, as well as a healthy association and labeling of features. Help them associate the connection between how their hair looks and that of their family members to relate to study of genetics. Chart their comparison on a graph showing the lineage of their hair type or create a class hair book.
