Give your pupils the chance to build their eye-hand coordination while they learn the letter M by engaging them in the creation of an M collage. To prepare for this activity, gather print media containing letters, safety scissors, glue and paper. After introducing your pupils to the letter M, give them scissors and print media, and ask them to clip out any Ms they come across. After each pupil has created a sizable pile of Ms, give them paper and glue and ask them to glue them down in an overlapping fashion.
Let your pupils practice their M writing skills while engaging in the time-honored kindergarten favorite, coloring. Get ready for this activity by flipping through your favorite coloring books and selecting pictures of objects that begin with M. For example, select a picture of a monster, a picture of a monkey and a picture of a mouse. Create copies of each picture for all of your students. After teaching your pupils to write their Ms, give them each a copy of each page, or allow them to pick their favorites. Ask the pupils to color the picture featured, then write "M" prominently on the top. If some pupils excel above the rest, challenge them to copy the entire word that it represents onto the top of the M.
Give your pupils the chance to play with yarn and create a tactile treasure by engaging them in the creation of yarn Ms. To prepare for this activity, create a large, block M. Give each pupil a copy of this M, along with some yarn, scissors and glue. Ask the pupils to position the yarn so it fills the M, in any manner they wish. Some may elect to cut the yarn into strips, while others might make swirls of yarn to fill the space. After they have positioned the yarn, ask pupils to glue it down, making their creation permanent.
Allow your pupils to practice the M skills by creating a piece of art for their favorite ladies -- their moms. Prepare for this project by gathering Popsicle sticks. Cut some of your sticks in half. Also, purchase inexpensive wooden frames, or clip frames out of card stock for a cheaper alternative. When time for the activity arrives, give each pupil two full size and two half-size Popsicle sticks and a frame. Help the pupils position the sticks, using the two full-sized ones as legs and the half-sized ones as the overlapping middle. Help pupils glue these sticks together, then position them on the left side of the bottom of their frames. Allow the pupils to write "o" and "m" to finish the word following their Popsicle stick M. If possible, place a picture of the pupil and his mom in the frame before sending it home to mom.
