How to Make an Elementary Pictograph

A pictograph represents data using pictures or symbols. The pictures are labeled to show the item or concept that they represent. A key is provided to show the number amount that each picture represents. A lively and interesting way for your kindergarten or first grade students to learn about pictographs is to create one depicting favorite flavors of ice cream.

Instructions

    • 1

Prepare the pictograph. Use a marker to write the title "My Favorite Ice Cream" at the top of a sheet of poster board turned lengthwise. Draw a rectangle two inches below the title, one inch in from each side and three inches up from the bottom with a marker and a ruler. Draw one vertical line dividing the rectangle in half. Draw two horizontal lines an equal distance a part.

    • 2

Cut the "scoop of ice cream" out of the large ice cream cone pattern using your scissors and then cut the "cone" out. Draw three outlines of the paper cone on a sheet of light brown construction paper and cut them out. Draw an outline of the paper scoop of ice cream on a sheet of dark brown, pink and white construction paper and cut them out. Write the words "Chocolate", "Strawberry" and "Vanilla" in the three rows of the first column of the first column leaving enough room to add the cut out ice cream pieces.

    • 3

Glue in the first row of the first column the brown construction paper scoop of ice cream and the light brown construction paper cone. Glue the pink paper scoop of ice cream and paper cone in the second row of the first column and glue the white paper ice cream scoop and paper cone in the third row.

    • 4

Use the small ice cream pattern to draw and cut 30 to 40 light blue ice cream cones (enough for each student and one for the pictograph key.) Write the word "Key" under the data table using your marker. Glue on a light blue paper ice cream cone next to the word "Key" then write "= 1 student". Attach the pictograph to the white board low enough for your students to reach it using white board magnets.

    • 5

Read the pictograph title as you point to each word with your pointer. Ask your students to read the ice cream flavors as you point to the words and pictures with your pointer. Point to the key and tell your students that one ice cream cone equals one student. Ask the students to take their crayons out of their desk. Pass out one of the small paper ice cream cones to each student and ask them to write their name on it with a crayon. Pass out a piece of double-sided tape and tell each student to put it on the back of their ice cream cone.

    • 6

Tell your students that when you point to their favorite flavor they may come up and tape their name in the second column in that row. Point to each flavor and help the students place their ice cream cone name tag in the correct row. Count the number of names in each row and write the number at the end of the row.

    • 7

Ask your students which flavor was the favorite of the most students in the class. Ask your students which flavor was the least favorite. Have your students write about the project in their journal.
