How to Turn a Fence Into a Chalkboard

Turn your yard into an outdoor art room with some paint and chalk. Chalkboard paint, available from a wide range of paint manufacturers, turns wood and other surfaces into an erasable chalkboard. Turn your fence into a chalkboard-filled art room for budding artists of all ages.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase chalkboard paint suitable for exterior use such as that made by the Australian paint company, Porters Original Paints. Visit the Porter Original Paints website (see Resources) to find a Porter paint distributor near you. Find a list of retail outlets in the United States by visiting the Sydney Harbour Paint Company website. If you use a different brand of chalkboard paint, ask the paint store if it is suitable for exterior use.

    • 2

Choose a color for the outdoor chalkboard. Chalkboard paint comes in several colors including traditional green and black. Ask your paint retailer if chalkboard paint can be tinted for more color options.

    • 3

Use medium- to rough-grade sandpaper to dull the finish of the fence. Wipe the fence down with a clean, damp cloth to remove any dust or dirt. Apply a coat of exterior primer to your fence with a paint brush.

    • 4

Apply a coat of exterior chalkboard paint with a paintbrush after the primer dries. Follow the drying directions on the can of chalkboard paint. Apply a second coat of chalkboard paint when the first coat of paint is dry. Let the second coat of paint dry completely. Give the kids some chalk and introduce them to their new outdoor art room.
