Purchase chalkboard paint suitable for exterior use such as that made by the Australian paint company, Porters Original Paints. If you use a different brand of chalkboard paint, ask the paint store if it is suitable for exterior use.
Choose a color for the outdoor chalkboard. Chalkboard paint comes in several colors including traditional green and black. Ask your paint retailer if chalkboard paint can be tinted for more color options.
Use medium- to rough-grade sandpaper to dull the finish of the fence. Wipe the fence down with a clean, damp cloth to remove any dust or dirt. Apply a coat of exterior primer to your fence with a paint brush.
