Sellars-Gunn Education Center in Burlington features several alternative programs, including vocational and technical education, an evening program, and a learning center for both middle school and high school students, which offers individualized instruction. Sellars-Gunn has its own "turning point" program, wherein students with behavioral problems can continue to learn in small classrooms and work at developing more positive attitudes and behavior. Students are rewarded using a point system, and once they are demonstrate success in the program they return to their home school.

Anson Challenge Academy is a secondary-level alternative school in Wadesboro. It has classes for young people with behavioral problems and for students with learning disabilities. The academy features a core curriculum of English, math, social studies, health and computer skills, with additional classes in financial management, speech, drama and art. Anson Challenge Academy has a resource officer who promotes a culture of non-violence ensures a safe environment, as well as a "Principal's Club" that rewards above-average academic achievement and good judgement with entertainment, special lunches and field trips.

Davidson River School bills itself as a "school of alternatives, not a typical alternative school." The school uses NovaNET, an online courseware system, to help students research, learn and recover lost credit hours. Davidson River School also has structured environment that helps students with academic, behavioral or attendance problems get back on track. The school works with both middle school and high school students and has an on-site counselor, a psychologist, a social worker and student advocates who offer support and encouragement.
