Public Schools in Onslow County, North Carolina

Onslow County is situated on the eastern coast line of North Carolina. The mission of the Onslow County Public Schools is to "provide students with skills and knowledge necessary to be responsible and successful citizens." With a population of over 150,000, Onslow County has eight high schools and eight middle schools. Choosing a public school is a daunting task for many parents. Certain considerations must be made such as the quality of education, test results, activities available and student demographics. Oslow County public schools score above the North Carolina public school average in EOG tests.
  1. Swansboro High School

    • Swansboro High School is an Onslow County public school located in the town of Swansboro. It scored above the state average in most subjects in 2009 with the exception of chemistry, physics, and algebra. School begins at 7:15 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. with classes in the morning and afternoon. Class sizes average around 22 students. Swansboro High School has a range of sporting activities such as baseball, basketball, football, golf, soccer and softball. Students can also be members of clubs such as art, academic derby, FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America) and journalism. Students at Swansboro High School are also eligible to receive Sponsors for Academic Talent (SAT) scholarships based on academic merit.

    Richlands High School

    • Richlands High School is an Onslow County public school located in the town of Richlands. Its vision is "Excellence in education" and it scored above the state average in most subjects. School begins at 7:15 a.m. and ends at 2:30 p.m. Students at Richlands High School benefit from a wide range of sporting and extracurricular activities. Richlands High School also has a fine arts program which includes activities such as chorus, band, dance, musicals, plays, orchestra, choir and visual arts. SAT scholarships are also available for students who perform well academically.

    Jacksonville Commons Middle School

    • Jacksonville Commons Middle School is located in Jacksonville, the principle city of Onslow County. 683 students are enrolled at Jacksonville Commons and class sizes average around 15 students per class. Its motto is "Believing, achieving, succeeding." Classes begin at 8 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. Eighth grade students at Jacksonville Commons performed higher than the state average in important subjects like reading, math and science. There are also a range of extracurricular clubs, sporting activities, and fine arts programs to choose from.

    Hunters Creek Middle School

    • Hunters Creek Middle School is located just outside Jacksonville and serves the White Oak District of Onslow County. Opened in 1990, more than 850 students are now enrolled at the school; it has an average class size of 17 students. Eighth grade students at Hunters Creek also performed above the state average in subjects like reading, math and science. Its academic excellence is seen through the success of its Academic Derby Team which has the best record in the county. It is also the only school from Onslow County with a team making it to the state "Battle of the Books" competition.
