Preschool is entry-level schooling to prepare young children for elementary curriculum. Lessons are focused on preparing children for the lessons they will encounter in kindergarten classes and can include literacy and social skills. Some preschools located within the area are Double Oaks, Amay James and Tryon Hills. Parents are encouraged to refer to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Zoning Maps to determine which school falls in their neighborhood.
Elementary schools educate students from kindergarten to the fifth grade. During this time students will learn the basics of literacy, science and social skills throughout their curriculum. Each school in the area has its own bell schedule and class times. While some schools start at 8:30 a.m., like Croft Elementary, others will start as early as 7:30 a.m., like McAlpine Elementary. Parents should determine which zone they fall into by contacting the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School District via their website. Provide your information, including your address and child's grade, and a district official will respond with the correct zoning and school information for your area.
Middle schools consist of grades 6 to 8 and prepare students for both the social and educational skills that they will encounter when they reach high school level. Rather than learning in one classroom with the same students, a child in middle school will rotate through classes that are based on a sole subject such as math, English or history. Some middle schools such as Kennedy Middle School offer home schooling options to parents with children that cannot attend the school physically. Middle schools throughout the Mecklenburg County area have their own schedules; therefore parents should contact the school district directly and provide their address for feedback on which schools to attend, or parents can refer to the school district's Student Placement page for zoning maps based on the school year.
When a child enters high school they are beginning four years of course work that span grades 9 to 12. High school prepares children for college and adult life by advancing their education in literacy, mathematics, history and social skills. High school is also a good starting point for the child that is looking to enter into collegiate sports. High schools offer sporting teams such as basketball, volleyball and football. While some high schools offer a wide array of sporting teams, others are limited. Parents who are unsure which high school their child should attend can fill out an online form through the school district's website to determine which schools their address qualifies for.
