How to Count Cumulative GPA

The cumulative grade point average is composed of the total number of credit hours that students have accumulated throughout their collegiate career. Each class the student enrolls in is assigned a specific number of hours, usually between one through six hours. In addition, the final grades assigned after completing the course are given grade values which help to determine the overall grade point average.

Instructions

    • 1

Use your transcript to determine the total number of credit hours attempted in college at all of the schools that you have attended.

    • 2

Calculate the total number of cumulative grade points. This is done by taking the grade value assigned for each letter grade and multiply it by the total number of credit hours assigned by the course.

For example, if you earned an A in a biology course worth three semester hours, multiply the grade value for an A, which is normally 4, and the number of course hours, 3. The total course points for this course would be 12 points. Repeat this step with each course.

    • 3

Divide the total number of grade points obtained from Step 2 by the total number of course hours attempted in college. For example, if the the total number of grade points is 12 and the total number of hours attempted is 3, then your cumulative grade point average is 4.0.
