A number line is a straight line that is assumed to continue infinitely in two directions from its origin (starting point). Evenly spaced marks on the line represent numbers that are positive (greater than zero) to the right of the origin and negative (less than zero) left of the origin. A number's distance from the origin is known as its absolute value. Counting to the right adds an increment -- usually one -- while counting to the left subtracts a unit.
