A document from the Michigan Department of Education's website offers several second grade phonics activities to do with parents. Look in the table of contents and find the activities listed under phonics. Proceed through the steps of each activity with your child. For example, parents can use the sounds students have covered in school in the "Sound Bingo" game.
The phonics section of the Sadlier-Oxford website offers some click-and-drag phonics games. This website is filled with pop-up windows that cover a good part of second grade phonics. For example, the long and short vowel windows offer multiple games where the child drags all of the pictures of words with specific vowel sounds into a box. There are directions that parents can follow to help their child with the activities.
The Alaska Small Business website offers free printable worksheets for second graders. The child can match a picture to a word in multiple choice format, which is the same format as standardized tests that students take in second grade. The exercises are divided into categories, such as animals, farm, fruits and vegetables.
The KidZone website offers printable flashcards for children to practice reading words that are part of word families. The activities offer step-by-step directions for teaching children to sound out different groups of letters.
