2nd Grade Math Activities by Smartboard

Second-grade math builds on elementary lessons from first grade with slightly more complex understanding of numbers and operations, geometry shapes and qualities, spatial sense and measurements.

SMART Boards, proprietary technology developed by SMART Technologies, combine interactive graphics, online activities and touchscreen technology. A SMART Board's multimedia capabilities can be used to enhance second-grade math concepts through fun and engaging activities.
  1. Number Sequencing Activities

    • SMART Boards can be used to engage the entire class in number-sequencing activities. These activities come in a variety of styles but all use the same concept of providing large graphics and sequential numbers with gaps. Students are given a choice of numbers to fill in the gap.

An example activity is provided in Resources. Fairy Fog uses rows of flowers indicated by numbers. Each activity omits one number for students to identify. Floating and fluttering butterflies represent the choices students can touch to fill in the number sequence.

Educators can run the activity for the entire class, allowing students to shout out answers or raise hands. Alternatively, you can allow students to select the correct number by touching the SMART Board.

    Counting Money

    • SMART Technologies provides a host of tools and support for its SMART Board. The Counting Money activity is provided as a free download from their library of tools. A link is provided in Resources.

Counting money displays animated series of coins and challenges students to determine the correct value. This activity can be paired with other lessons and learning about coin values and addition.

    Looking for Patterns

    • The ability to recognize, describe and continue repeating numeric patterns is a core outcome of second-grade math learning. SMART Exchange, a library of activities for use with SMART Boards, provides an activity that helps build student proficiency in patterns.

The activity displays rows of numbers, using a primary color (white) and a secondary color designed to help students recognize patterns. Students identify the patterns by choosing a set of four choices. This activity is best used as a practice and review of number patterns and concepts.

    Classroom Feud

    • "Classroom Feud" can be orchestrated as a head-to-head math competition in the spirit of Family Feud. Teachers can download the application (link provided in Resources) and compose it with questions that teams of students will answer. You can also upload pictures and team names for competing groups.

Organize the game by dividing the students into two teams. One student from each team stands on opposite sides of the SMART Board and tries to tap the screen first on behalf of their group to answer a question. Each student should have the opportunity to tap the screen for their team.
