How to Make Transparencies From Photocopies

Transparencies allow teachers or presenters to copy graphs, images and information onto a transparent sheet and project the image onto the wall or projector screen for instructional purposes. Although computer programs and interactive whiteboards are more commonly used in classrooms today, the overhead projector serves the same purpose when easy access to a computer is not available. Making transparencies with a photocopier and the desired images allows the teacher to include visual stimuli to lessons or presentations.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a copy of the desired image on the glass of the photocopier. Select images from books, magazines or printouts from the Internet for your transparencies. Keep in mind that unless you have a colored photocopier, the resulting transparency will be black and white.

    • 2

Place the transparency sheet in the paper bypass tray and select "bypass tray" under the paper setting. This tells the photocopier from where to take the paper. Failing to set the copier to "bypass" results in paper being drawn from the default paper tray.

    • 3

Select "OHP" or "transparency" under paper type. Exact wording may vary among photocopiers. Failing to select this setting may result in a melted transparency and a paper jam, as transparency sheets cannot tolerate the heat setting necessary for paper copies.

    • 4

Press "Start" to copy your original onto the transparency. Allow the transparency to cool slightly to set the image.
