How to Make African Gazelle Masks

Students may be required to make an African mask as part of a class project, or you may want to make one at home with your children. These masks will teach students about the traditional ceremonies and rituals of the African people. There are many different types of African masks that can be made out of many different materials. Children can easily make masks out of paper card stock. African tribes were known to make masks replicating various animals that they hunted. Making a mask in the shape of a gazelle can be done with basic materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Fold one piece of card stock in half lengthwise.

    • 2

Create the long shape of a gazelle's head by drawing the shape of a heart on the card stock. Start at the crease of the card stock and draw one half of a heart. Cut out holes where the eyes will be placed.

    • 3

Draw the shape of a mouth on the red construction paper and cut it out. Set the mouth aside.

    • 4

Draw eyelashes and eyes on the black construction paper and cut them out. Set these pieces aside.

    • 5

Paint the heart-shaped cut-out light brown with craft paint. Allow to dry.

    • 6

Glue the mouth, eyes and eyelashes onto the painted card stock.

    • 7

Roll each of the two remaining white pieces of paper into the shapes of long gazelle-type horns. Roll them to be wider at the base and pointed at the ends. Staple the rolls at the ends to hold the shape. Paint the pieces with black craft paint and brown circular lines. Allow to dry.

    • 8

Glue the horns to the top of the head of the gazelle.

    • 9

Staple a piece of string to the mask to allow the mask to be worn.
