Games to Help Learn Cell Parts & Functions

Cells are the basic structural design of all organisms. Located within cells is an intricate system of organelles each having its own function. Hands on activities and games are an effective way to teach such concepts in the classroom. There are several fun games to actively engage students in learning about cell parts and functions.
  1. Organelle Matching Game

    • Divide the class into small groups. Have each group make two sets of organelle matching cards. Write the names of organelles on one set of cards. For the other set, have students write the functions of the organelles. Exchange cards with another group to see which group can match the most pairs of cell cards with its function card. The group to match the most pairs in the least amount of time wins.

    "Build a Bacterium" Scavenger Hunt

    • Each student receives a worksheet with three index cards. Each card represents a part of a cell. Divide students into small groups and give instructions pertaining to a bacterium and a goal it must accomplish. Each group works together to determine which cell part is needed to form the basic structure of the cell and to carry out the function stated. To accomplish this, students negotiate and trade cards with other groups to collect the required cell parts.

    Cell Bingo

    • Create bingo cards with cell parts written or drawn in each grid. Call out a function of a cell part and have students cover the picture or word with a small scrap of paper if found on the card. The first student to have five blocks in a row covered and calls out "Bingo," wins the game. Trade cards and play another round.

    Cell Analogies

    • Divide the class into groups of three or four students each. Call out a cell structure and see which group can first determine an everyday object that shares the same function. The first group to call out the answer scores a point for that round. Continue rounds of play until all cell structures have been presented and analogies have been determined. The group with the most points wins the game.
